West Midlands' Power Crisis: Storm Goretti's Impact and Ongoing Challenges
By Andy Giddings
The West Midlands is still grappling with the aftermath of Storm Goretti, which brought heavy snowfall and left hundreds of homes without power. The situation has improved significantly since Friday, when thousands were affected, but the region is far from back to normal.
The National Grid (NG) has been working tirelessly around the clock to repair the power lines damaged by the storm. Despite their efforts, a yellow weather warning for ice remains in place, and temperatures are still hovering around freezing, posing ongoing challenges for residents.
West Midlands Trains and Transport for Wales have issued warnings of continued disruption to their services, affecting commuters and travelers alike. The NG has brought in engineers from other areas to assist in the repairs, urging customers to report any power cuts they experience.
As of Saturday morning, over 700 power cuts were reported in Staffordshire, with a similar number affecting Birmingham and its surrounding areas. Shropshire saw almost 800 homes without power, a significant improvement from Friday's 10,000 homes, but still a pressing issue.
The region is far from being fully restored to normalcy, and the NG continues to call for customer reports of power cuts to better understand the extent of the damage and prioritize repairs.
