The recent scandal known as "Qatargate" has sent shockwaves through Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. In a bold move, Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs, emerged as the first cabinet member to advocate for a comprehensive investigation into this alarming situation that has unfolded amidst ongoing conflict in the region.
Chikli's call for scrutiny follows mounting allegations that link Netanyahu’s office directly to the government of Qatar. During an interview on Kan Reshet Bet radio, he characterized the scandal as “outrageous” and emphasized the necessity for a thorough examination of the claims being made.
This development came after Naama Lazimi, an opposition lawmaker from the Democratic Party, urged David Zini, the chief of the Shin Bet security agency, to probe into the prime minister’s potential involvement in the matter as well as the unauthorized release of classified documents.
Lazimi raised serious concerns, asserting that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had become a means through which hostile narratives were disseminated, insisting that the Shin Bet must undertake its duties without hesitation or fear.
In response to inquiries regarding his position on the issue, Chikli reaffirmed that if there is evidence warranting police investigations into the prime minister’s aides, it should indeed be pursued. He described the situation as "shocking" and insisted that it deserves full attention. Referring to a report by Israeli outlet i24 News, Chikli questioned, "Who said not to investigate? Of course it should be investigated! I find these revelations shocking."
Reports indicate that suspects in the Qatargate case, Eli Feldstein and Srulik Einhorn, had connections to Netanyahu’s advisor, Yonatan Uric, dating back to April 2024, with allegations of fabricated talking points and messages purportedly originating from Qatar. Chikli expressed his dismay, stating, "Einhorn received money, perhaps Feldstein did too, and this paints a very troubling picture. I cannot defend this; it is shocking, to say the least."
Adding further intrigue to the scandal, Feldstein, who previously served as a spokesperson for Netanyahu, disclosed that the prime minister was aware of a leak concerning a classified Israeli army document to the German tabloid Bild. During a segment of a three-part interview aired on Kan 11 television, Feldstein claimed, "He is the one who ultimately stood behind the leak to the newspaper. To publish such a document, the prime minister needs to be informed from start to finish."
Feldstein recounted a conversation he had with Netanyahu post-publication, during which the prime minister expressed his approval, thanking Feldstein for the disclosure and emphasizing its importance. When asked about the extent of Netanyahu’s knowledge regarding the leak, Feldstein asserted, "He knew everything."
The unfolding Qatargate scandal has undeniably shaken the foundations of Israeli politics, raising critical questions about accountability and transparency within the highest echelons of government. As this story develops, one can’t help but wonder: how will this impact Netanyahu’s administration, and what will be the implications for governance in Israel moving forward?
