Marin County Flooding: King Tides and Storm Surge Impact (2026)

Imagine waking up to find your neighborhood submerged in water, with homes and businesses struggling to stay afloat. This is the harsh reality for residents of Marin County, where king tides and an impending storm have unleashed a deluge of floodwaters. But here's where it gets even more alarming: the National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, predicting up to 2.5 feet of water above ground level in low-lying areas—a level not seen since 1998. And this is the part most people miss: the combination of a full moon, Earth's closest approach to the Sun (perihelion), and a powerful storm system is creating a perfect storm of flooding conditions.

On Friday, a Marin County neighborhood near Lucky Drive and Dougherty Drive in Larkspur and Corte Madera was already grappling with floodwaters. Footage from a news helicopter captured the scene, while at Fitness SF in Corte Madera, staff and patrons were seen frantically bailing water out of the gym, which later announced its temporary closure on social media. The Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for the North Bay shoreline and interior valleys until 2 p.m. Saturday, while a Coastal Flood Advisory extends to coastal areas from Sonoma to Monterey counties through Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service warns that significant coastal flooding is expected due to the convergence of high astronomical tides and storm surge. 'Numerous roads will be closed, and low-lying properties, including homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, will be inundated,' forecasters stated. Shoreline erosion is also anticipated. At the San Francisco tidal gauge, high tides are projected to reach 2.2 feet above normal on Friday and a staggering 2.5 feet above normal on Saturday morning—a level unseen in over two decades. Sunday's high tide is expected to be slightly lower, at 1.9 feet above normal.

But here's the controversial part: while king tides are a natural phenomenon, the intensity of this flooding raises questions about the role of climate change in exacerbating such events. Are we witnessing the new normal for coastal communities? The storm system itself is expected to bring sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph along the coast and higher terrain. Rainfall will range from half an inch in most areas to up to 3 inches in the coastal mountains, though a brief break in the rain Friday morning offered a temporary reprieve.

A Wind Advisory was initially issued for the North Bay mountains, San Francisco, East Bay hills, and the coast, as well as Monterey and San Benito counties, but it was canceled early Saturday as wind speeds subsided. As residents brace for the worst, the question remains: How prepared are we for the increasing frequency and severity of such weather events? What do you think? Is this a wake-up call for better climate resilience, or just a rare occurrence? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
