Clemson University has once again made headlines with another significant addition to its defensive back roster. On Wednesday, Corey Myrick, a rising junior safety from Southern Miss, officially announced his decision to join the Tigers. This move marks an important step for Clemson as they continue to strengthen their defensive lineup.
Myrick is now the fourth defensive back to commit to Clemson this week, proudly joining a talented group that includes Elliot Washington II, a senior cornerback/nickel from Penn State; Jerome Carter II, a rising junior from Old Dominion; and Donovan Starr, a sophomore cornerback from Auburn. These additions signify Clemson's commitment to enhancing their defense through strategic player acquisitions.
Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 200 pounds, Myrick is highly regarded in the transfer portal, holding the No. 213 overall ranking in On3’s transfer ratings and is recognized as the No. 22 safety available. In the most recent season, he showcased his skills by recording an impressive 82 tackles and securing one interception, demonstrating his capability on the field.
Myrick made his commitment known during a visit to Clemson, which began on Tuesday evening. Prior to his arrival at Clemson, he had also checked out Louisville on Monday. His recruitment has been competitive; he had scheduled visits with several other schools, including LSU, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and Memphis. The latter is particularly noteworthy as Memphis recently hired Charles Huff, the head coach from Southern Miss, which may have influenced Myrick's decision-making process.
Previously, Myrick played his freshman year at Marshall and honed his skills during his high school career at Cincinnati's Colerain High School. Last week, we highlighted Myrick as a potential candidate that Clemson was interested in, indicating that his commitment was anticipated among fans and analysts alike.
With Myrick's commitment, he becomes the fifth player to officially join Clemson’s roster from the portal this season, complementing the defensive backs with linebacker Luke Ferrelli, who transferred from California.
Here’s a quick summary of Clemson’s recent portal commitments:
1. (CB) Elliot Washington II (Penn State)
2. (LB) Luke Ferrelli (Cal)
3. (S) Jerome Carter II (Old Dominion)
4. (CB) Donovan Starr (Auburn)
5. (S) Corey Myrick (Southern Miss)
