BP, the oil giant, is set to sell a 65% stake in its Castrol unit for a staggering $10 billion. This move comes as part of a strategic reset, including a green strategy U-turn and a commitment to divest $20 billion in assets by 2027. The sale values Castrol at an impressive $10.1 billion. The company has been actively seeking buyers for its Castrol unit, and in May, several energy giants and private equity firms were reportedly interested. These included India's Reliance Industries, Saudi Arabia's Aramco, Apollo Global Management, and Lone Star Funds. The sale is expected to significantly strengthen BP's balance sheet, with proceeds from the transaction. The interim CEO, Carol Howle, expressed her confidence in the deal, stating that over half of the targeted $20 billion divestment program has already been completed or announced. This strategic shift marks an important milestone in BP's ongoing reset strategy, aiming to reduce complexity and focus on its core businesses. The sale of the Castrol majority stake follows the appointment of a new CEO, Meg O'Neill, who will take over on April 1st, replacing Murray Auchincloss, who held the role for less than two years. Industry experts, like Stephen Isaacs, suggest that this CEO change could be the final piece of the puzzle in getting BP back on track. Dan Boardman-Weston, CEO at BRI Wealth Management, predicts further stake sales and a return to BP's traditional focus on oil and gas exploration and development. BP's shares have shown a mixed performance, opening at 1.3% on Wednesday and ending the day 0.9% higher. Despite a 15.7% drop in 2024, the stock has managed to gain around 9% so far this year, with pressure easing in 2025 due to leadership changes, cost-cutting measures, and recent oil discoveries.
